I was watching the news yesterday and found out University of New Mexico held a Gathering of the Nations for the Native Americans. In one video shot of the event, I saw a group of Native Americans sitting around a large drum in a circle with drumsticks in their hands. That's when I remembered a Deaf event I went to in Utah. They had a survival camp set up by Verl Osmond. The local tribe came over to give us an idea what their culture is like. They had a large drum, sat around it in a circle and started swinging their drums as they sang in their native tongue.
Even though I was categorized profoundly deaf, I could hear really loud sounds just a little bit. I felt awed and inspired by their songs and drumbeats. They blew me away with their raw emotions as they sang with all their heart and spirit! Also, their drumbeats are loud enough to be felt in the immediate area around the large drums. It was a really cool experience for me!
Deaf or hearing, I recommend you to go hang out at a Native American event, concert, and/or festival and check them out!
