Interpreters at Pride Festival 2006

I wrote an email to the Phoenix Pride Festival committee. It looks like I touched a nerve with someone who recently posted anonymously.

I do not accept anonymous posters who leave one-liners. However, I am up and open to debate!

To the anonymous poster:
What facts am I missing? Should I say nothing? Should I sit back and let hearing people go on uneducated about Deaf people? Why be spineless?? I hope you'll come back and post your point of view.

Moving on.

Earlier today, I spoke with a close friend of mine and she pointed out one thing. I realized that if I posted this email I wrote to the festival committee, I may never work with Phx Pride or GLOW again. I had to pause and think about it for a little longer..

Well, if that does happen, then, it is sad more people in America aren't allowing freedom of speech these days. I don't feel any regret for writing that email. Something had to be said. If not me, who else will do it?

And, pray tell, why do the strong ones who voice their opinions or concerns always get blamed by the weak ones?!

UPDATE: I just spoke with someone from the GLOW committee and got more facts and details. Thank you! It seems that I am never in the "loop".

It appears that the Pride Festival decided to take the easy way out by using a 1st year ASL student, rather than using the list of interpreting agencies GLOW provided to them. Legally, GLOW is not obligated to be part of getting interpreters for the Pride Festival. But, still.. I feel it is our responsibility as Deaf individuals to educate other hearing people about our needs.

Bottom line: It is NO excuse to hire a really bad, underqualified interpreter to do the work!
