Here's an open letter to the burners in Baltimore!
Hey guys!
I am kinda new to poi, too. I've already met Kate and one more lady (forgive me for not remembering the name! :-\ ). But I've enjoyed meeting them at Winter Solstice (did I get that location right?). Holy crap! It was freakin' C~O~L~D that night! Kate will remember me as the Deaf dude from Phoenix, Az. Hello, Kate! :) It was funny to see you guys talk about sounds and speakers. I dunno how that'll benefit me because I'm really Deaf. ;) I've never had to try to go with the recorded music. Because, for the First Fridays' Art Walks, we have a live band playing our fire shows at the Firehouse studio. The band try to match the fire performers' tempo so it's always dynamic and usually in sync.
There was this Phoenix Deaf guy who goes by his playa name: Froggie. I met him over a year ago and he introduced me to poi. I played around very little with poi, But I started practicing after I bought my first poi set last August 2005. My practicing schedule was not consistent until after I got back from my visit to Baltimore last February. I've done my first fire at the Phx Art Walk on March 3, 2006. All I can say it was a great learning experience and lots of burnt hair. ;) Fortunately, no pain came out of it! But Froggie wasn't satisfied, so he demanded I have a weekly schedule with him for practicing and trying new moves. That helped a lot! If you guys plan to go to Burning Man this year, Froggie and my best friend will be there with Arizona's Sol Tribe. Look for the thin Deaf guy spinning awesomely with flexible moves. He makes poi look so easy and flawless!
Last Monday was my 5th time to do fire and noticed I did WAY better then I did on March 3. I am supposed to do one more this Friday, but due to a doctor's visit and meds, I can't put myself in risk. I'd be thrilled if I am able to join, practice and perform this summer! I'll be living in Pikesville area of Baltimore.
Can I come see you guys? I have some things planned this month like volunteering to be a special service provider for the Deaf-Blind Conference in Towson. But, if I am free on Sundays, I'll be sure to come?
Philip
